Filing Property Exemptions For Greenwood & Franklin
-
Start the process by confirming the newly purchased property is showing in your name vs the prior owner. Johnson County gives you the ability to search for what exemptions exist online here. If the property is not showing in your name yet then this typically will require a call to the auditor’s office (see offices tab) or if you have enough time before the end of the year you can email or text Mitch and he will try to confirm this for you.
If you live in Johnson County AND You found the property is already in your name AND it’s before December 15th then I would encourage you to complete the application online, but you may also complete it in person or by mail. The Auditor’s Real Estate office is open from 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday.

Homestead Exemptions: You can also Complete & Submit the Homestead Deduction/Credit online here. Once you search and select/find your property scroll down to the bottom left-hand corner where you can Apply online for Indiana Homestead Property Tax Deduction.
Or Download The Homestead Deduction/Credit Form here to manually fill in and take to the Auditor’s office
Remember that taxes paid this year are actually for the prior year and taxes that relate to this year will actually be paid next year.
If you bought an existing home and the seller had a homestead exemption in place as of March 1, in the year you bought it, then the exemption should AUTOMATICALLY carry forward and be a deduction for this year’s taxes, payable next year.
To play it safe be sure to file for the exemption no later than the last business day in December.
Before completing the form please print out a copy for your records.
