Westfield, Indiana is twenty miles north of Indianapolis, Westfield is an established city that is still growing as it expands. Recent annexations coupled with rapid population growth have Westfield poised for new developments to accommodate the community it serves. Westfield’s focus on community values is the motivation behind its numerous community events like the Westfield Farmers Market.
The Downtown Westfield Association has successfully depended on volunteers to keep city initiatives in motion, programs and events that maintain Westfield’s small town appeal. Though Westfield is near enough to Indianapolis for residents to enjoy big city shopping and dining, Westfield itself offers its own local alternatives. The town boasts a thriving business community as well as a budding arts and culture community, both contributing to its healthy economy.
Westfield Washington schools are recognized both statewide and nationally, attracting new families to contribute to its 30,000-plus existing residents. Westfield also offers parks and trails, golf courses, and tourist and historical attractions. This friendly city embraces Midwest values and its reputation as a place that feels like a small town with the convenience of big city amenities.
Recreation Westfield offers a quaint downtown Main Street with antique and specialty shops, charming dining spots, as well as a farmer’s market in the warmer months. Enjoy outdoor activities like summer concerts at Cool Creek Park, a 90-acre nature park located on U.S. 31 two miles south of Westfield. Visit one of the many area parks like Asa Bales Park with picnic and walking trails. There are 8 parks in total with at least 4 more in the planning stages. For fitness benefits, the Monon Trail, the Midland Trail, and the Natalie Wheeler Trail offer miles of trails for bik-ing, walking, running, and rollerblading. Westfield golf courses include Pebble Brook Golf Course (36 holes) and Hanging Tree Golf Course (18 holes). There are bowling and ice-skating facilities nearby and other recreational facilities in Hamilton and Marion Counties. Hamilton County Parks and Recreation offer year-round activity at Cool Creek Park and other nearby locations. Nearby Morse Reservoir, one of Indiana’s largest artificial lakes, provides scenic facilities for boating and fishing.
FUN FACT Many of the founders of Westfield were Quakers who were sympathetic to the anti-slavery movement. Westfield became a stop along the Underground Railroad and is thought by some to be responsible for the freedom of more slaves than any other town in northern Indiana. There are at least 8 locations in town that are reported to have been stops or “depots” for the fleeing slaves. Many of these homes and barns from the early 1800’s still stand today.
